How Big is 100,000: March Mid-Month Update – find out how close (or far away) I am from my goal so far this month!
February was not a good month. There. I said it. I was super bummed with how the second half of the month went and incredibly frustrated with really not even being close to my goal for the month. In fact, I barely surpassed my page views for January. Will March be any different…..
Last month I ended up with approximately 6,220 page views – my goal was 7,700. Yikes. Talk about a punch to the gut. And of course it came the first month I was doing this series – naturally. Why not embarrass myself in front of everyone – makes total sense. At the end of February, I (dramatically) was thinking “what’s the point” – “why am I working so freakin hard at this and nothing is happening….” – basically I allowed myself that moment of hanging out in the doldrums. A regular old Debbie downer. And then day 1 and 2 of March happened…. and my numbers still sucked. 191 and 183, respectively. In order to meet my March goal of 10,000, I need to average 322 per day. That wasn’t happening.
Then, on the third day, I woke up to a huge spike in numbers – all coming from Flipboard. My Thick-Cut Noodles + Bone Broth and Soft-Boiled Egg had somehow taken off and I ended up having well over 500 views that day. That got me back in the game and honestly gave me the little bit of extra motivation I needed. I was back on track – kind of. The following week was decent, mid-200’s every day, but still not what I needed.
I decided I needed to mix things up a bit, try something new …. anything. I needed a boost somehow.
I did 3 things.
- I invested in buying a new computer and Photoshop. You guys, up until this past week (I am embarrassed to even write this down) I was using…. Picasa. Picasa you guys. They literally don’t even make that program anymore (So that shows you how freakin old my computer was)! I kept wondering why I would take these pictures that looked “so good” on my nice camera, but then I would upload them and they would seemingly fall flat. Ummm duh. It was your computer and editing software (or lack thereof). Holy huge difference. Amazing. Why on God’s green Earth did I not do that sooner! (probably because my new computer costs more than my mortgage…. just sayin – yikes).
- I tried a new scheduling program called Tailwind. I had heard of this before, because a lot of other bloggers use it. It is a program that essentially you can schedule your Pinterest pins in and it will then pin them throughout the day so you don’t have to be a Pinterest psycho. For whatever reason, I was under the impression that through this program it would pick your pins for you – kind of a set it and forget it thing – which I didn’t want. I want to pick my pins because I want my boards to reflect my own taste. I was wrong (do you see a theme here). In Tailwind, you pick out all your own pins, but then they are simply pinned for you at times you choose. It is awesome and I have seen a big difference in the number of referrals I get from Pinterest – again, why didn’t I do that sooner…
- Finally, I sat down and crunched some numbers. I lowered my goal down to 9,000 (since I didn’t meet my goal last month and wanted to make it more realistic). Then I came up with a game plan – of sorts. Which really entailed me setting a min-goal of reaching 5,500 page views by the end of March 19th (yesterday). I didn’t sleep much and pumped out posts like Cheesy Irish Soda Bread, How to Make Cold Brew and Irish Cold Brew + Cream and Sugar. I edited them all on my new computer and gave up more hours of sleep than I would like as I learned Photoshop and created my posts. I was so excited (And proud of myself?) when all three of those posts (back to back to back) were accepted by Foodgawker and placed in either the first or second row all three days (for those of you who don’t know – that means Foodgawker picked them to be “featured”). My numbers were awesome and …….. I reached my goal last night. 5,510 page views by midnight. Whew.
So, I am kicking my very own butt and probably have massive dark circles under my eyes, but I am destroying my numbers for last month. And I am so freakin happy about it. I am not saying I can keep this pace up forever (it’s not possible), but I feel like I have this invisible 6-7k ceiling I need to bust through. Actually, that seems to be a pattern. There are little mini ceilings that I have had to double-down to get through over the past year and half and this is just one more of those.
So, lessons learned – invest in yourself (money and or time), delegate (while still retaining a fair amount of control) and if you want something, you need to be willing to kick your own ass and potentially forego any sleep. Because when you are mom of two with an already full-time job (that isn’t blogging), that is the only place you can “create more time.” I try really hard to not give up time with my girls to blog, so finding “extra” time can really only come from the midnight hours…. (Sigh). Good-bye sleep. It was nice to know ya.
So, that’s my mid-month update! I won’t even say how I am feeling right now about whether I think I will meet my goal or not because I don’t want to jinx anything…. I am just keeping my head down and will keep plugging away……and away and away and away.
I am so excited for this next coming week – and I can’t wait to share it with all of you 🙂
Oh, and my photo above is in honor of spring (Which start TODAY!) – that was my Roasted Salsa Verde from last April – still one of my favorite salsa/dips….. yay for spring! We made it!
