Description

French Onion Dip Recipe – a delicious, flavorful smokey french onion dip recipe is perfect for your next get-together, cookout, or holiday gathering!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 tablespoons butter
  • 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced*
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/3 cup mayo
  • 3 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
  • 12 tablespoons fresh chives, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked onion powder (reg. onion powder works)
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/8 teaspoon lemon zest
  • pinch of kosher salt and ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. OPTIONAL Step: use our Smoked Onions recipe to smoke the onions before caramelizing them – not required, but a fun extra step if you really want to amp up the flavor!
  2. Caramelize Onions: Bring large cast iron skillet to medium-high heat. Add butter and move it around so that the entire pan is thinly coated.  Add onions and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Move onions around the pan and bring heat down to medium once onions start to cook down. Continue cooking onions 15-30 minutes, turning heat down as necessary, until they start to turn golden brown. Once onions are golden brown add in the garlic, stir to combine and let the garlic become fragrant. Then turn off the heat and let them cool a bit.
  3. Combine Dip Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl combine the sour cream, mayo, cream cheese, chives, parsley, onion powder, worcestershire, liquid smoke, white vinegar, lemon zest, pinch of salt and pinch of pepper. Stir to combine. Add caramelized onions and stir again.
  4. Taste: Taste and feel free to add a tiny bit more liquid smoke or salt, as needed (taste again after it sits overnight and adjust the flavor again).
  5. Let Sit: this is one of those recipes that just tastes better after it gets a chance to sit in the refrigerator overnight! But, it will thicken quite a bit so let it return to room temperature on the counter before serving, so it is soft and scoopable!

Notes

  • *Onions: we HIGHLY recommend making our Smoked Onions for this recipe and then caramelizing them! Really adds a smokey punch!
  • Overnight Flavor Develops: after testing we discovered this is one of those recipes that just tastes better the next day, after it gets a chance to sit in the refrigerator overnight! But, it will thicken quite a bit so let it warm back up a bit on the counter before serving, so it is soft and scoopable!
  • Storage: store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Serving: serve with your favorite crackers (regular or gluten-free) or chips!
