Baked Potatoes on the Grill

Learn how to make a baked potato on the grill with this super easy recipe! The perfect side dish for any grilled dinner!


  • 4 small/medium russet potatoes
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • kosher salt and ground black pepper
  • for serving: sour cream, butter, chives, and seasoned salt


  1. Preheat grill to a medium-high heat (400-450 degrees F). 
  2. Wash potatoes, poke a few holes in each one with a fork, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 
  3. Double wrap each potato individually in aluminum foil. 
  4. Place directly on the grill grates and close the grill lid. Let cook for approx. 45-60 minutes (or until internal temp reaches 210 degrees F), but total cook time will depend upon the size/width of your potatoes. 
  5. Remove from grill and serve with your favorite baked potato toppings. 


  • Pre-Cook: you *can* precook these in the microwave (poke with fork, microwave for about 4 minutes on HIGH wrapped in a damp paper towel) before following the directions above to shorten the cook time a little bit. 
  • Large Potatoes: if you have larger russet potatoes then I would definitely recommend microwaving beforehand to shorten the total cook time.
  • Storage: any leftover potatoes can be taken out of the foil and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Simply reheat in the microwave.
