Description

How to Cut Butternut Squash – an easy tutorial that teaches you how to cut up butternut squash into halves, slices and cubes!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 butternut squash
  • cutting board
  • sharp knife

Instructions

Before cutting into your butternut squash, make sure you rinse and dry the squash.

Halves:

  • Cut approx. 1/2 inch off of each end, discard.
  • Use a large, chef’s knife to cut the butternut squash in half lengthwise.
  • You can also cut the squash in half where the thinner neck starts to get larger at the base for more manageable, smaller sections.

Slices:

  • Follow the directions for cutting the butternut squash in half.
  • Cut each section of the squash in half, lengthwise, again and place the cut side down on the cutting board.
  • Start at one end of the squash section and work your way to the other end making 1/4-1/2 inch thick cuts all the way through, resulting in half circle-shaped slices.

Cubes:

  • Follow the instructions for cutting into halves and slices.
  • Stack 3 butternut squash slices on top of each other, slice in half lengthwise, rotate 180 degrees on the cutting board, and make 1/4-1/2 inch slices across the slices resulting in small cubes.
  • Continue this process for all sections of the butternut squash.

Cook the squash any way you want – we love roasting butternut squash to make Butternut Squash Soup!

Notes

  • Storage: cut, uncooked butternut squash can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: place the cut pieces of butternut squash on a baking sheet in a single layer.  Put the baking sheet in the freezer for about 3 hours, or until fully frozen, and then transfer the pieces to a freezer-safe container and store for up to 3 months.
