This old fashioned is definitely a show-stopper that is going to impress the crowd at your next party and become one of your next go-to cocktails!
The Best Smoked Old Fashioned
We have been making various versions of a traditional old-fashioned cocktail for years! No matter how you like to pour your bourbon old fashioned, you can add a fun twist by using a smoking gun to add some amazing smokey flavor.
Our simple cocktail smoker was very affordable and found on Amazon. It will definitely bring your cocktail game to the next level! In Wisconsin, we like to add a little bit of sweetness with a splash of Sprite but this is totally optional. Just make sure you garnish your smoked old fashioned cocktail with an orange peel, maraschino cherries, and a cinnamon stick if you are feeling festive at your next dinner party.

What You Will Need
- whiskey or brandy – just pick-up a bottle of your favorite rye whiskey or brandy at your local grocery store.
- simple syrup – this can also be found at the liquor store or simply make a homemade simple syrup at home!
- bitters – there are a variety of aromatic bitters, we love angostura bitters or orange bitters for this one.
- Sprite pop – optional, but a great addition if you like sweeter cocktails.
- large ice cube – best served over a large piece of ice made in ice molds, but a handful of regular ice cubes works too.
- garnish – fresh orange rind, orange slices, and/or luxardo cherry.
- cocktail smoker – we have been using a Sitoo smoking kit, but there are a variety of options out there! It makes for a great conversation piece and addition to your cocktail bar!
How To Make A Smoked Old Fashioned
The first steps to making this smoked cocktail are to gather all of the simple ingredients and a cocktail smoker.
Place a small amount of wood chips in the top of the cocktail smoker. Option to use a small drill to widen the holes on the bottom of this piece. Be careful to not go all the way through to the mesh that holds the wood chips. Widening these holes will allow more smoke to come through.
Now select the type of wood chips you want to use. This is totally up to your personal preference. We love the cherry wood chips for this recipe card.
Grab a rocks glass, muddle a cherry, and then add the whiskey, simple syrup, and bitters to the glass. Next, add your choice of garnishes and ice.
Place the smoking piece on top of the glass with wood chips in it. Use the torch to burn the wood chips and place the small piece on top. This will allow the smoke to go down through the holes and into the glass with the cocktail creating the most magical cocktail experience.
After about 15-20 seconds, remove the cocktail smoker and enjoy this classic bourbon cocktail!
Recipe FAQ
We used E&J Brandy to make the smoked old fashioned pictured here, but you can easily use any of your favorite bourbon, whiskeys or brandy.
Typically a fruit wood chip works great, we prefer cherry, but any different types of wood chips would work. Our cocktail smoking kit also came with apple wood chips and pecan wood chips.

Description
The BEST Smoked Old Fashioned recipe! Level up your regular old fashioned with this flavorful and delicious smoked version!
Ingredients
- 1.5 – 2oz bourbon whiskey or brandy
- .25 – .5oz simple syrup (or muddle a sugar cube)
- 3 dashes bitters
- (optional) splash of Sprite (for Smoked Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioned)
- ice
- garnish: orange peel + maraschino cherry
- SITOO cocktail smoker*
Instructions
- Mix: In a lowball glass add bourbon (or brandy), simple syrup, bitters and sprite (if using).
- Ice + Garnish: Add ice and garnish with orange peel and a cherry on a toothpick.
- Smoke: Take your SITOO cocktail smoker and place on top of the drink. Take the small top off and add a pinch or two of your smoking wood chips. Use a small butane lighter and burn the smoking chips for a second or two. Once they start burning (they won’t burn very long) cover with the top and watch the smoke trickle down into the cocktail glass. Wait 15-20 seconds and then remove the entire cocktail smoker.
- Serve: Serve and enjoy (and get ready to make more because these will be popular!).
Notes
- Brandy Old Fashioned (Sweet): if you are looking for a sweeter brandy old fashioned recipe then feel free to add in a splash of sprite to the top and maybe an extra cherry or two!
- Maraschino Cherries: I highly recommend using these Luxardo Maraschino Cherries – they are the best!
- Simple Syrup vs. Sugar Cube: feel free to add a sugar cube and muddle it in with the cherry instead of adding the simple syrup. Either way works.
- *SITOO Cocktail Smoker: we have tested quite a few ways to make smoked cocktails over here at TWS and this is by far the best option we have found. PRO TIP: use a small drill and make the holes in the bottom of the cocktail smoker a bit wider (just don’t go through the wire mesh) so more smoke can come through. If you aren’t seeing very much smoke that may be the issue OR actually use less of the smoking wood chips – you don’t need a lot and if you use too much they end up blocking the smoke from going into the glass.
- Butane: this is the butane refill we purchased.
- Wood Chips: we love using the cherry wood chips, but all of them are amazing!
