What You Will Need
- butter – It’s the best way to ensure that your pizza easily releases from the ramekin and to get a nice crispy crust after baking. You could also probably get away with cooking spray or olive oil but note that we only tested this recipe using butter.
- mozzarella cheese – Melted mozzarella cheese is a must on any homemade pizza but feel free to use any special blend of cheeses.
- pepperoni – We quartered ours to allow them to fit into the ramekins.
- pizza sauce – Feel free to pick up your favorite store bough variety or try your hand at our easy homemade pizza sauce.
- pizza dough – We used pizza dough from the grocery store but you could certainly use our easy homemade pizza dough recipe.
- parmesan cheese – Just a bit to sprinkle on the pizza dough prior to baking.
- optional pizza toppings – sausage, black olives, mushrooms, green bell pepper, fresh mushrooms.
- optional garnishes – fresh basil, fresh oregano, additional grated parmesan.
How To Make A Pizza Pot Pie
While your oven preheats to 400 degrees, grease the bottom and sides of each ramekin with butter. This ensures that your pizzas release easily after baking.

Next, add about 3/4 of a cup of shredded mozzarella cheese to the bottom of each ramekin followed by a layer of quartered pepperoni on top of the cheese, which equates to about 2-3 tablespoons. If you want to add any additional toppings, this is the time to add them. Then add about a quarter cup of your homemade sauce or store bought sauce on top of the toppings.

Now spread out your pizza dough on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 6×6 inch squares. Place a square of dough over the top of each ramekin and pinch the dough around the edge of each ramekin. Feel free to toss the excess dough.

Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and let them cook in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or when you notice a nice golden brown color on the pie crust. While they bake, melt a tablespoon of butter in a small bowl and brush it on the pizza dough and then add a sprinkling of parmesan cheese over the top. Return to the oven for 2 minutes.

Carefully remove the ramekins from the oven, let them cool slightly and the carefully flip the ramekin over onto a clean plate and lift the ramekin up to reveal your melty, cheesy pizza! Because the pizza crust was cooked laying on top of the ramekin, once flipped, they’ll make a natural bowl of sorts, which holds in the sauce, cheese, and toppings.
How To Safely Flip Your Pizza Pot Pie
To safely flip our ramekin, we used a fish spatula to lift one edge. Then we used our oven mit protected hand to hold the bottom of the ramekin, while with the other hand we placed a clean plate on top of the pizza pot pie. Then in one smooth motion, we flipped the plate and ramekin 180 degrees so that the plate was on the bottom with the upside down ramekin on the top.

Recipe FAQs and Tips
- Can I use crescent dough instead? You could, but note that it will have a flakier consistency than traditional pizza dough. And be sure to follow the package instructions and adjust cooking time as needed.
- Can I use a custard cup or small bowl instead of a ramekin? We’ve found that ramekins are the perfect sized vessel for this easy dinner. Anything smaller might make it tough to fit all of the ingredients in.

Our Pizza Pot Pie recipe is a delicious and fun twist for your next pizza night at home! The whole family is going to love it!
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened & divided
- 8oz block of mozzarella cheese, shredded (about 3–4 cups)
- 1/2 cup pepperoni, quartered
- 2 cups pizza sauce
- 13.8oz package pizza dough
- 1–2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated
- optional additions: sausage, black olives, mushrooms, green pepper, etc.
- optional garnish: fresh basil, fresh oregano, additional grated parm
Additional Items:
- (4) 5-inch ramekins
Instructions
- Prep: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Rub about 1 tablespoon of softened butter on the inside of the ramekins.
- Filling: Put about 3/4 cup of shredded mozzarella in each ramekin. Add about 2-3 tablespoons of quartered pepperoni or any other desired fillings to each ramekin. Then add about a 1/4 cup of pizza sauce on top of the fillings.
- Pizza Dough: Spread out the pizza dough and cut into 6×6 inch squares. Place each square of dough over each ramekin and pinch the sides to secure on top – it’s okay that the corners hang down a bit.
- Bake: Place all of the ramekins on a large baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. While they bake, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Carefully brush the tops of the pizza pot pies and sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top. Continue baking for 2 more minutes.
- Serve: Carefully place a plate on top of one ramekin and flip it all over allowing the pizza pot pie to come out of the ramekin and on to the plate. Feel free to garnish with fresh basil, oregano and more grated parmesan.
