The Most Extra Creamy Mashed Potatoes
Our creamy mashed potatoes recipe is one of the best comfort foods that we continue to make again and again! There are so many different ways to make classic mashed potatoes – Instant Pot mashed potatoes, slow cooker mashed potatoes, or our ultimate yukon gold mashed potatoes made on the stove top. Those versions are typically made with a stand mixer, electric hand mixer, or potato masher, but in this potato recipe we used a potato ricer. This handy tool creates the creamiest mashed potatoes that melt in your mouth!

What You Will Need
- russet potatoes – highly recommend traditional Idaho potatoes, but you could also use Yukon gold potatoes, if you prefer.
- salt and pepper – simple seasonings that are always a must!
- heavy cream – highly recommend using this essential ingredient to achieve the most smooth and creamy texture.
- unsalted butter – melted butter has always been the perfect compliment to any mashed potato recipe.
- sour cream – just a little bit for the creaminess and tangy flavor.
- garlic powder – adjust the amount added to your personal preference.
- potato ricer – this simple tool is easy to use and once you try it, you’ll never use another tool to mash boiled potatoes again.
How To Make Creamy Mashed Potatoes
The first steps to making this easy recipe are to gather all of the simple ingredients.
Now add the peeled and cubed potatoes to a large pot of boiling water. Let them cook for 10-15 minutes, depending on their size. They should be very soft and fork tender. Drain the cooked potatoes and let cool slightly to room temperature.
Now place the hot potatoes in the potato ricer and push them through into a large bowl. This will need to be done in batches because they won’t all fit at the same time.
Pro Tip
If garlic is your thing, try making creamy garlic mashed potatoes by adding more garlic powder and/or some minced garlic cloves. It really does level up your potatoes!
Next, add the salt, pepper, sour cream, garlic powder, butter and cream to the mixing bowl. Mix to fully combine these easy mashed potatoes.

Storage & Freezer
Place leftover mashed potatoes in an airtight container and store in the fridge for 3-4 days. We do NOT recommend freezing mashed potatoes. They do not thaw and reheat well.
Recipe FAQs and Tips
- What can I add to mashed potatoes to make them taste better? In this recipe card we used heavy whipping cream, butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and sour cream. You could also add some ranch dressing, fresh garlic, etc.
- How can I make creamy, lump-free mashed potatoes? This can easily be achieved by peeling off the potato skin, use a potato ricer or whip to smooth with a mixer, and then add all the creamy ingredients (butter, heavy cream, sour cream, etc).
- Meal Prep: to prep a large batch of mashed potatoes ahead of time, simply place them in a casserole dish, cover with aluminum foil, and store in the fridge for 2-3 days. When ready to serve, warm in an preheated oven at 350 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until warmed throughout.
