What You Will Need
- salted butter – leave out at room temperature to make an easy softened butter that can mix with garlic.
- garlic – everything is always better with a little bit of garlic in the mix.
- extra virgin olive oil – option to sub with avocado oil or vegetable oil.
- sweet yellow onion – a mild onion that brings the best flavor!
- large eggs – traditional ingredient when making any fried rice recipe.
- cooked rice – highly recommend using leftover rice from the fridge! Any type of rice works – long grain white rice, jasmine rice, basmati rice, brown rice, etc.
- soy sauce – toss this essential ingredient in the rice as it cooks on the flat top griddle, feel free to sub with coconut aminos, if you prefer.
- green onions – a great addition for the bright color and the best flavor!
How To Make Hibachi Fried Rice
The first steps to making this easy recipe are to gather all of the basic ingredients.
Pro Tip
For best results, we highly recommend using cooked rice that has fully cooled. Leftover or day old rice works best, but if you do cook the rice on the same day make sure you let it cool before turning it into hibachi style fried rice!
Bring the flat top cooktop or large skillet to a medium heat, drizzle on the oil, and cook the onions until softened. Add the whisked eggs and move around until cooked. Next, add a tablespoon of garlic butter, cold rice, and some soy sauce.
Use a large spatula to keep moving everything around until the rice is warmed through. Option to add another tablespoon of garlic butter to the hot skillet.
Fold in the chopped green onions and serve any way you want!
Best Way To Serve Hibachi Fried Rice
We highly recommend scooping a serving of this classic fried rice into a small bowl, compact the rice down, and flip the bowl on to a plate to create a bowl-shaped rice pile. This is how the pros do it! Enjoy with some hibachi chicken, hibachi steak, hibachi shrimp, or any other main course. Add some sesame seeds or homemade yum yum sauce for the best dinner!
Recipe FAQs and Tips
- What do hibachi chefs squirt on rice? Just a simple soy sauce! We kept it simple and used soy sauce but feel free to amp up the flavor with our fried rice sauce.
- What vegetables can I add to fried rice? Feel free to toss in some frozen peas and carrots or make our hibachi veggies right alongside this delicious rice. Other vegetable options would be bell peppers, white onion, or fresh green peas.
- Leftovers: any leftover fried rice can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge to enjoy the next day.

Description
The BEST Hibachi Fried Rice recipe! With garlic butter, rice, egg and onion – this recipe is quick, easy and packed with flavor!
Ingredients
Garlic Butter:
- 2–3 tablespoons butter, room temp (reg or dairy-free)
- 1–2 teaspoons garlic, minced
Hibachi Fried Rice:
- 1–2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (sub avocado oil)
- 1/2 sweet yellow onion, diced
- 2 eggs, whisked
- 1–2 tablespoons garlic butter
- 4 cups cooked rice, preferably day-old*
- 1–2 tablespoons soy sauce, more as desired
- 1/4 cup green onions, sliced
Instructions
- Prep: With a recipe like this, regardless of whether you are cooking on a flat top (like a Blackstone) or large cast iron skillet – everything cooks pretty quick so it really helps if everything is prepped and ready to go before you start cooking anything.
- Garlic Butter: Combine Garlic Butter ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.
- Onions + Eggs: Bring flat top (or cast iron skillet) to medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil. Add onions and move around until softened. Add whisked eggs and move around until cooked. Add 1 tablespoon garlic butter and let melt.
- Add Rice: Add rice and top with soy sauce. Move everything around until it is mixed together and rice is warmed through. Feel free to add another tablespoon of garlic butter and season with any salt and pepper you desire. Fold in the green onions and then transfer to a plate. Set aside.
- Serve: We love serving this alongside our Hibachi Chicken and some Yum Yum Sauce!
Notes
- *Day-Old Rice: day-old rice just cooks up better when making fried rice, it’s recommended but not required.
- Blackstone: we used a flat top/Blackstone, but you can definitely also just use a large cast iron skillet!
- Hibachi Fried Rice vs. Blackstone Fried Rice: we have another Blackstone Fried Rice on the site and the hibachi version is much simpler and is inspired by the rice served at your local hibachi restaurant. The Blackstone Fried Rice is packed with more veggies, includes the option for chicken (or steak) and is served with a Fried Rice Sauce.
