This Tartar Sauce recipe is simple to put together and so, so delicious. This creamy condiment outshines the store-bought sauce by miles and is perfect with our baked cod, but works with just about any fresh fish recipe.
The Best Tartar Sauce Recipe
Fresh ingredients will completely change what you thought you knew about this classic condiment. This easy recipe yields creamy tartar sauce made from basic ingredients with nothing but extraordinary flavor. Serve it with our baked cod, fried seafood, or air fryer fish sticks and get ready to be dazzled.
What You Will Need
- Claussen pickles – These little guys have the best flavor and are our absolute favorite!
- mayo – Store-bought mayo will work, but homemade mayonnaise will bring flavors to the next level. If you’re going the store route, be sure to select a good quality mayonnaise as this is the creamy base of your sauce.
- fresh dill – Adds a fresher flavor than what you can get from dried dill.
- fresh lemon juice – Just a little lemon juice adds brightness throughout.
- garlic – Adds complex tones of heat, earthiness, and some spice.
- dijon mustard – Lends a pungent and slightly spicy flavor.
- fresh onion – We used a sweet yellow onion.
- ground black pepper – Just a bit to heighten flavors.

Description
The BEST tartar sauce recipe! A quick and flavorful tartar sauce that’s perfect for your next fresh fish recipe!
Ingredients
- 1/4 – 1/2 cup Claussen pickles, spears
- 1 cup mayo
- 3 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
- 1–2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
- 1–2 teaspoons dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon sweet yellow onion, diced
- kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prep Pickles: In order to remove some of the excess water from the pickles (no one wants watery tartar sauce), lay each spear on its side on a cutting board and cut off the seeds. Cut remaining part of the pickle into small pieces and then using either a cheesecloth or clean hands, squeeze out as much remaining liquid as possible.
- Blend: Add prepared pickles to food processor along with mayo, dill, lemon juice, garlic, dijon and onion. Blend until consistency is smooth (don’t over-blend).
- Taste + Adjust: Taste and add any salt or pepper, as-needed, as well as any additional dill, lemon, etc.
- Serve: we love serving this with our Dreamy Baked Cod – enjoy!
Notes
- Pickles: I highly recommend the Claussen pickles we used for testing, their flavor is light and bright and works perfectly in this recipe. Of course, use what you have available if you can’t!
