Why You’ll Make This Quick Tomato Soup Recipe
With Canned Tomatoes All Year Round

- 🥫Pantry staple: I don’t know about you, but I always have at least 3 cans of diced tomatoes in my panty. So when it comes time to clean house, this recipe automatically goes on the menu.
- ☺️ Cozy: Nothing says I care like a cozy bowl of homemade soup. And because this one is so quick, you can make it on a moments notice.
- 🥄Flexible ingredients: I’m sensitive to dairy, so I tested this one with regular heavy cream and full fat coconut milk and its the creamiest no matter which ingredient I use. And no, you can’t taste the coconut.
Key Ingredients & Substitutions
Be sure to see the recipe card below for a full listing of ingredients, instructions, and estimated nutritional information.
- Diced Tomatoes: You need just one can of this pantry staple, but if you have more, double or triple the recipe and give some to a friend!
- Heavy Cream: This little addition makes a world of difference when it comes to the creaminess, but feel free to swap with full fat coconut milk if you’re avoiding dairy.
- Fresh Basil: Don’t have it or simply don’t love the taste of fresh basil? Feel free to omit completely.
How To Make Homemade Tomato Soup With Canned Tomatoes

Step 1 – Place all of the ingredients in a high speed blender. Vitamix is my favorite.

Step 2 – Blend on high until smooth and creamy.
How To Make Tomato Soup Thicker
For a bit of a thicker consistency, let it simmer for a longer period of time on the stove and then remove it when it’s thick enough. Or add less water to the blender when combining ingredients in step 1.

Step 3 – Pour blended soup into sauce pan and let simmer until thickened and warmed through.

Step 4 – Serve with our air-fryer grilled cheese and/or our homemade croutons and enjoy!

We absolutely love our Vitamix blender for this homemade tomato soup made with canned tomatoes and for other recipes like our Sheet Pan Soup, and Roasted Butternut Squash Soup. No blender? No problem. Just place all of your ingredients in a sauce pan and use a handheld immersion blender instead.

Best Way To Serve Creamy Tomato Basil Soup
This warm and cozy bowl of tomato soup is always great with the perfect air fryer grilled cheese sandwich! Perfect for dunking in the hot soup. And for a quick garnish on your bowl of soup, toss on some extra chopped basil leaves, homemade croutons, and freshly cracked black pepper. Some freshly grated parmesan cheese would also be great or a big piece of crusty bread (also for dunking)!
What We Learned Testing this Recipe
- Using a high speed blender will quickly create a silky smooth texture. If you want more control over the texture of your homemade tomato soup, use the immersion blender technique.
- Adding a sprinkling of freshly chopped basil on top adds a super fresh flavor that really makes this one feel homemade.
