How to Cut Mango – this simple tutorial will have you cutting mangos like a pro all summer long for snacking, adding to tacos, or tossing in smoothies!
I’m going to try and keep this as simple as possible and include all the information you could possibly need regarding mangos! You will be surprised at how easy it actually is, but I still remember when I used to struggle trying to figure out the best way to cut this tricky fruit. Once I learned a few easy tips, I realized that it is actually super simple. The whole family is now enjoying mango all summer long!
How to Pick A Ripe Mango
Mangos will soften as they ripen so you will want to focus on the feel of the fruit, NOT the color! The color of mangos can vary. You will want to give the fruit a slight squeeze to see if it is soft (similar to an avocado or peach). If it’s too soft, then it is too ripe and you will find it to be squishy inside. You want it just soft enough! Ripe mangos will also have a fruity aroma to their stem.
When Are Mangos In Season?
SUMMER! In warmer areas of the U.S. you can find mangos all year but the peak season for this fruit is typically June and July.
Do Mangos Have A Pit?
Yes, they have a flat, hard pit towards the center of the fruit. It is technically edible but most people cut around it since it is so hard.
How Do I Freeze Mango?
Simply follow the steps to cut the mango into cubes, place them on a parchment-lined pan (make sure they aren’t touching), and place the pan in the freezer for about 2 hours. Then you can take them out of the freezer and place them in a silicone freezer bag (we love these) and put them in the freezer for up to 10 months! Perfect for adding to smoothies!
Recipes To Make With Mangos
Mango is delicious by itself but there are also so many great recipes that use this delicious fruit! Some of our favorites include:
How To Properly Cut A Mango
Step one – pick a perfectly ripe mango and place on a cutting board.
Step two – Hold upright and slice off one side of the mango about a 1/4″ from the stem. Do this on both sides of the mango.
Step three – Hold one side of the mango in the palm of your hand and slice through the fruit (be careful to NOT go through the skin). You will do this length-wise down the fruit to make slices and then rotate in your palm to also make slices the other direction resulting in cubes.
Step four – Push the rounded side of the mango towards you causing the cubes to separate. You will see that they are still stuck to the skin.
Step Five – You will then use your knife to carefully slice the cubes off of the skin.
Step six – Enjoy any way you want!

How to Cut Mango – this simple tutorial will have you cutting mangos like a pro all summer long for snacking, adding to tacos, or tossing in smoothies!
Ingredients
- 1 ripe mango
Instructions
- Grab a ripe mango and a sharp paring knife.
- Hold your mango upright on the cutting board with the stem on top.
- Slice off the side of your mango by cutting through the mango about 1/4″ from the stem. This way you will avoid cutting into the pit.
- Do this all the way around the mango.
- Then take each side of the mango, hold it in the palm of your hand, and very carefully cut through the fruit (be careful to not cut all the way through the skin). You will cut slices the length-wise of the fruit and then turn the mango in your hand to make slices the other direction. This will result in cubes that are stuck to the skin.
- Use your hands to pop the round side of the mango the other direction causing the cubes of fruit to separate.
- Very carefully use your knife to slice the mango cubes off the skin and into a bowl.
- Enjoy by itself, toss it in a smoothie, use as a topping on tacos, or toss in the freezer to save for later!
