A Perfectly Cooked Smoked Sweet Potato
I’ve grilled, baked, and mashed the classic sweet potato, so it was due time that I infused them with some rich flavors from our trusty smoker. After some trial and error, we got creamy and slightly smokey sweet potatoes with a decadent sweet butter topping. These are just begging to be served at Thanksgiving or any other special occasion.
Key Ingredients & Substitutions

Be sure to check out the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, and estimated nutritional information.
- Sweet Potatoes: This variety of potato is a must if you’re looking for a naturally sweet potato. However, Yukon gold potatoes have a similar texture once cooked and could be used as a substitute.
- Butter: I love a good rich salted butter here, but you can always use a plant-based butter.
- Brown Sugar: Feel free to swap with a coconut sugar.
- Cinnamon & Allspice: These classic seasonings add warmth and the best hit of cozy spice to the smoked sweet potato.
How To Smoke Sweet Potatoes

Cut your potatoes lengthwise and drizzle the cut side with some olive oil and a sprinkling of salt. Flip the potatoes and repeat those same steps on the skin side and pop them in the smoker.
How Long To Smoke Sweet Potatoes at 225
Expect to spend anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours smoking your sweet potatoes. Smoking anything typically takes a while, but you can experiment with the smoking time by cutting your sweet potatoes in wedges or discs to potentially decrease the total amount of time needed.

Mix up the butter and seasonings and set aside until you’re ready to serve.

Place a healthy dollop of the cinnamon sugar butter on each sweet potato half, and dig in!
What To Serve With Smoked Sweet Potatoes
I purposely developed this recipe to pair with smoked meats that require the same temperature. These would pair perfectly with our smoked chicken quarters, smoked pork butt, or our smoked baby back ribs.
Testing: What We Learned
A lot of smoked sweet potato recipes out there suggesting cooking whole sweet potatoes – we wanted to test halving them to speed up the cook time … and it worked SO well!!
Smoked Sweet Potato Recipe FAQs and Tips
Nope! Our method of putting them on a baking sheet worked great.
This would decrease in the cook time, but it also might takeaway some of the smokey flavor that gets infused during the smoking process.
Because we cut ours in half, there’s no need to poke holes in the flesh of the potato. If you were smoking whole potatoes, we would recommend poking holes in them. This helps the steam escape, which keeps the potato from potentially exploding during the cooking process.
