- flour – option to use gluten-free flour, regular flour, almond flour, oat flour, or whole wheat flour instead.
- coconut sugar – substitutes include date sugar or regular brown sugar.
- ground cinnamon + ground nutmeg – love these warm spices together!
- kosher salt – just a pinch to help accentuate those fall flavors.

How To Make Apple Crisp
The first steps to making this easy recipe are to using a paring knife or apple peeler to peel the outside skin off of each apple. Place these apple slices in a prepared 9×9 baking dish and feel free to sprinkle with a little extra cinnamon and nutmeg.
Place the oats, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, salt, and butter in a food processor and pulse until fully mixed together. This can also be done in a large bowl with a fork.
Evenly distribute the crisp topping over the top of the sliced apples and bake at 375 degrees F for 30-35 minutes or golden brown.
Remove from the oven, let cool, and then serve any way you want!
Best Ways To Serve Healthy Apple Crisp
We absolutely love serving a classic apple crisp with some dairy-free vanilla ice cream. Here is a great list of The Best Dairy-Free Vanilla Ice Creams! Obviously, you can enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, if dairy isn’t a concern for you. Option to add another sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top, if you want!
Recipe FAQ
We used honey crisp apples, which are sweet apples similar to gala apples or pink lady apples. You could also use tart apples, like granny smith apples. Up to your own personal preference.
If you have any apple crisp leftovers, simply cover the pan with aluminum foil and place in the fridge for up to 4 days. Or move to an airtight container. The crisp topping will start to get soft and a bit soggy, but it’s still delicious.

Description
This Healthy Apple Crisp is a delicious apple crisp recipe that is gluten-free, dairy-free and made with real, simple ingredients!
Ingredients
- 4 large fresh apples (see notes)
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 1/2 cup gluten-free flour (sub with all-purpose flour)
- 3/4 cup coconut sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- pinch of kosher salt
- 1/2 cup vegan butter, room temp
Instructions
- Oven: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Apples: Peel apples, cut into 1/4 inch thick slices (removing core). Spray a 9×9 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and layer apples inside.
- Crisp Topping: Add oats, flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, kosher salt, and butter to small food processor or medium-sized mixing bowl. Pulse until ingredients are mixed together well (if using a food processor) or use a fork to mix together (if using a mixing bowl). The texture should be clumpy. Pour mixture over apples evenly.
- Bake: Place in preheated oven on the middle rack for 30-35 minutes. Remove and let cool at room temperature.
- Serve: with dairy-free ice cream or dairy-free whipped cream.
Notes
- Apples: we used honey crisp apples, but sometimes apple crisp tastes ever better if you use 3-4 different types of apples, so you have a mix of flavors. You would still use a total of 4 large apples, but feel free to use up to 4 different kinds, if you want!
- Peeling Apples: If you don’t like peeling apples (who does?) then we recommend using this apple peeling attachment for a Kitchen Aid stand mixer! So nice to have!
- Baking Length: Recommended cook time is 30-35 minutes. If you prefer more crisp apples in your apple crisp we would do 25 minutes or so – if you prefer a very soft apple in your apple crisp then we would do 35+ minutes!
