What You Will Need
- ground beef – just a pound of your favorite ground beef, personally we love the butcher blend from Country Natural Beef!
- kosher salt & pepper – a sprinkling of each is always needed when cooking any kind of meat.
- butter, ghee, or olive oil – feel free to use the one that works for you!
- garlic & yellow onion – these help to get the flavor party started in the pan.
- green bell pepper & mushrooms – classic veggies for any philly cheesesteak recipe!
- liquid smoke, worcestershire sauce, & soy sauce – the perfect combo of flavors that really bring this sloppy joe to life.
- beef broth – just a little for flavor and moisture.
- cornstarch – a thickening agent to help keep them from getting too sloppy.
- American cheese – option to use regular or dairy free!
- toasted buns – you have the option to grab your favorite – whole wheat, gluten free, etc.
What Should I Serve With Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
There are so many great side dish options for this meal, like an Easy Oven Baked Potato, Roasted Broccolini, or Sautéed Zucchini! Any quick and easy side dish would be perfect!
Storage Tips
Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just keep the meat mixture separate from the buns so they don’t get soggy.
How To Make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
First, you can begin by browning the ground beef in a cast iron skillet with a sprinkle of salt & pepper.
Remove it from the pan with a slotted spoon and set it to the side.
Next, add some butter to the pan and sauté the yellow onion, garlic, and green bell pepper.
Then add the mushrooms and cook for 3 more minutes.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the liquid smoke, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, beef broth, & cornstarch.
Add the beef back to the pan with the cornstarch mixture and cook for a few minutes while it thickens up.
Remove pan from heat and place a few slices of cheese on top to melt slightly.
Use a spatula to remove it from the pan and serve on a toasted bun.
Enjoy!

Thank you, Erin. This is the second recipe of yours I have tried (chicken pot pie was the first). I was easily able to make my portion dairy free! It was delicious. I am starting to accept all the dicing, mincing, etc. knowing it will be worth it. I did not use the Liquid Smoke because we don’t like things smoked. I wasn’t sure what it would do to the taste.
How you can get the liquid portion so perfect amazes me. Not too liquid, not to dry. Your photography and notes are wonderful. Well, I am off to peruse your site for a recipe for supper tonight….Thanks again.

Wow – delicious. Love your recipe inspirations, thank you!
The only customization we made (we made four sandwiches; two are saved for another day), was using a slice of provolone and 1/2 slice of american cheese per sloppy joe. The liquid smoke, and other umami ingredients, are genius. Served with roasted broccoli. Yum!

Delish!
Sassy says
Great recipe. Super easy and quick to make. Used Provolone instead of American because American cheese is repulsive. Also added steak seasoning. Perfect. Thanks for the recipe!

These were really great! Premade the recipe to feed a large group of men and reheated on the grill at the racetrack on a cold night. Rave reviews, men begging me to share the recipe with their wives. Thank you!!

My daughter tried this recipe and her family loved it. I decided to try it despite my husband hating sloppy joes. The liquid smoke along with the worcestershire, soy and broth give it amazing flavor and even my husband loved it! I just passed the recipe to my mother.
