Follow along as we show you how to make a simple and delicious Sushi Burrito in three different ways! Made with real, simple ingredients in a variety of combinations that everyone is going to love.
The Best Sushi Burrito Recipe
Unless you are new around here, you know that traditional sushi rolls are one of our all-time favorite foods! Whether we are enjoying them at our favorite sushi restaurant or making our own homemade sushi, we love to try a variety of different flavor combinations. These easy sushi burritos are the best way to level up your regular sushi rolls into a larger roll, which means less time needed to make your sushi recipe before enjoying it!
Another great way to enjoy sushi is to make a classic hand roll or these sushi stacks! If you haven’t tried either before, we highly recommend them.
What You Will Need
- nori sheets – you should be able to find traditional nori sheets at your local grocery store or an Asian grocery store.
- sushi rice – options to make stovetop sushi rice or Instant Pot sushi rice before assembling your sushi burritos.
- protein filling options – in the recipe card below we have included options for fresh tuna and imitation crab, but you can also use fresh salmon, shrimp tempura, crab salad, or any other protein or raw fish (sushi grade) that you want.
- fresh vegetable fillings – we love using cucumber, carrots, bell peppers, purple cabbage, kale microgreens, avocado, but you could also add-in some lettuce or…
- dipping sauces – keep it simple with some soy sauce or make a batch of sriracha mayo or wasabi mayo!
How To Make A Sushi Burrito
The first steps to making this easy sushi burrito recipe, are to prep all of the fresh fillings that you will be adding to your sushi burritos.
While you are prepping the fresh veggies, you can have the fluffy sushi rice simmering on the stovetop, in the Instant Pot, or rice cooker.
Once all the fillings are ready to go, grab one of the nori sheets and gently brush some water on the bottom inch of one sheet.
Place the top inch of the other seaweed sheet on that bottom inch that was just brushed with water. They should stick, creating one large nori sheet. On the sheet closest to you, use a large spoon to spread cooked sushi rice over the bottom nori sheet, and add your desired fillings to the middle of the rice. Then brush a light coating of water on the top nori sheet.
Now grab the rice covered side that’s closest to you and pull it over the filling ingredients to start rolling the sushi burrito away from you.
After you have fully wrapped the sushi burrito, cut it in half with a sharp knife, and enjoy! We have included options for a California Sushi Burrito (pictured below), Spicy Tuna and Avocado – pick your favorite!
Best Ways To Serve A Sushi Burrito
These delicious sushi burritos are a handheld meal that can be enjoyed all on their own. However, if you are looking to add a little something to your meal you can add a dipping sauce. We love the classic soy sauce or some simple spicy mayo for a little kick. You could also add some crispy salmon skin or a sprinkling of sesame seeds.
Popular Variations
There are an endless amount of burrito fillings you can use for your sushi burrito! We love to offer a variety of different options and let everyone fill their burrito any way they want. Here are a few of our favorite fillings:
- Spicy tuna – just mix some chunks of sushi-grade tuna with sriracha in a small bowl and then add it to the burrito with your favorite vegetable fillings.
- California – the classic combination of imitation crab, cucumber, carrots, and avocado.
- Avocado or veggie burrito – easily make a vegetarian sushi burrito by leaving out the protein and using avocado, cucumber, bell pepper, kale microgreens, & purple cabbage.
- Salmon – ask your local grocery store for some sushi-grade salmon and use that in place of the tuna with all your desired veggies.
- Philly roll – check here for the traditional ingredients used in a Philadelphia roll and increase them a bit to make a full burrito.
Feel free to dip in some soy sauce (sub in Tamari if gluten-free).

- 2 tablespoons kale microgreens

- 4–6 thin strips red bell pepper
- 4–6 thins slices purple cabbage
Dipping Options:
- soy sauce or tamari
- spicy mayo
- wasabi mayo
Instructions
- Prep Ingredients: make sushi rice and cut up ingredients.
- Prep Nori Sheets: Take one piece of nori and place shiny side up. Take a small brush and dip in some water. Brush the bottom inch or so lightly with water. Immediately place the second piece of nori, shiny side up, overlapping with the first piece just where the water is so they stick together. You should then have one large, long piece of nori.
- Add Sushi Rice: Use a spoon to place the sushi rice so that one of the sheets of nori is fully covered with sushi rice – use the back of the spoon to press down and spread out the rice so there is just a thin, compressed layer.
- Roll: Use the brush to brush a thin layer of water on the second piece of nori (that doesn’t have rice on it). Ensure the piece of nori with the rice on it is closest to you. Add your filling to the middle of the rice. Take the edge closest to you and fold over the filling, tucking under. Keep rolling until both nori sheets are rolled around the filling – the water should ensure the second piece sticks as it rolls.
- Cut and Serve: Cut in half with a sharp knife. Use any dipping sauce you want – soy sauce, spicy mayo or wasabi mayo.
