The other day I was experimenting with a grilled BLT sandwich and really wanted to cook everything outside. So after some trial and error, I figured out the perfect system to get perfectly cooked bacon on the grill! As much as I love the smell of bacon, I was happy to keep the smells (and grease) outside.

Key Ingredients & Kitchen Tools
Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, and estimated nutritional information.
- bacon: Thick cut bacon is our favorite, but you can easily use a thinner variety. Just be sure to adjust the cook time as noted in the recipe card.
- rimmed baking sheet: This ensures that the bacon grease doesn’t drip off the pan.
- tin foil: Saves you from scrubbing all the grease off your pan.
- wire rack: This allows the bacon to be cooked evenly and keeps it from getting soggy from the grease.
How To Cook Bacon On The Grill

What To Do With Leftover Bacon
We love using leftover bacon in our sourdough grilled blts, bacon ranch pasta salad, chicken bacon ranch quesadillas, or in our smash burger sliders.
Recipe FAQs and Tips
- Should you flip bacon on the grill? Because the bacon is on a wire rack, there’s no need to flip the bacon. The wire rack allows the bacon to get cooked evenly on both sides.
- What do I do if there’s a flare-up from the bacon grease? We chose to grill our bacon with a baking sheet to avoid flare-ups, but knowing that accidents happen, if you experience a flare-up, close the lid to cut off the oxygen supply and turn off the burners. If the flames persist, use a fire extinguisher, not water, as this can spread the flames.
- How long does it take to grill bacon? This all depends on the thickness of your bacon and your preferred bacon crispiness. We found that anywhere between 10-20 minutes will work.

Ingredients
- 8 bacon slices
Instructions
- Prep: Preheat the grill to a medium heat of 400 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top of the foil.
- Add Bacon: Spray the wire rack with a non-stick spray and place the pieces of bacon on top. Try to space them out, so they are not touching.
- Grill Bacon: Place the entire sheet pan with bacon on the grill grates and close the lid. Let it cook for 10-20 minutes (depending on the thickness of the bacon). Try to keep the heat inside the grill at 400 degrees F for the entire cook time.
- Serve: When the bacon reaches your desired crispness, carefully remove it from the grill, and enjoy the bacon any way you want – we LOVE to make Grilled BLTs!
Notes
- Cook Time: this will vary depending on how thick the bacon slices are and how crisp you like your bacon.
- Storage: any leftover cooked bacon can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days.
