It is a super delicious and versatile dinner option that is shockingly easy! We have been making smoked pizza on our Traeger grill for a while now, but this easy grilled pizza might be even better. This simple pizza recipe is going to quickly become a summer favorite and a new go-to grilling option!
Have you ever tried a cauliflower pizza crust? It is made in the oven, not the grill, but it is so tasty – we highly recommend!
What You Will Need
- pizza dough – we cannot recommend our super easy homemade pizza dough enough, but you can also use a store-bought dough (we love Delallo’s)!
- semolina flour – great for sprinkling on your counter or prep surface for spreading the dough to prevent it from sticking, but if you can’t find it at your local grocery stores no big deal! Just spread on parchment paper.
- pizza sauce – we also have a delicious homemade pizza sauce, but your favorite store-bought pizza sauce will work too.
- toppings of choice – don’t forget your favorite melty cheese and then any of your favorite topping combinations!
How To Make Homemade Pizza Dough
If you have ever been intimidated to make your own pizza dough, we are here to tell you that it is super easy. Just follow our simple tutorial on how to make homemade pizza dough with only 6 ingredients!
Mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer, let it sit for 5 minutes. Then add flour and oil, knead with dough hook for 2 minutes, add the salt, and knead for 5 more minutes. Let it sit for 30 minutes, divide in to 3 equal portions, and let them sit for another 15-20 minutes. That’s it! They are now ready to go!
How To Grill Pizza
The first step to making a perfect grilled pizza is to prepare the pizza dough. We separate the dough into 3 portions, sprinkle a generous amount of semolina flour on your work surface, and use your hands to spread each portion of prepared pizza dough into a circle (as thin as you want).
Once you have your pizza dough spread out to your desired thickness, place it on a sheet of parchment paper on a cutting board, and bring it out to the grill.
Make sure the grill grates are hot and clean, spray with nonstick cooking spray, and use the parchment paper to easily flip the dough on to the grill (gas grill or charcoal grill).
Close the lid and let it cook for about 2-3 minutes over direct heat, resulting in grill marks on the bottom of the crust.
Use a large spatula to carefully flip the dough over and continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes.
Now you can remove the cooked crust from the grill and spread your favorite pizza sauce on top.
Next, cover the top of the dough with your favorite pizza toppings, lower the grill to medium-low heat, and place the pizza back on the grill.
Close the lid and let it cook until the cheese melts. Remove it from the grill and enjoy the best homemade pizza!

Recipe Tips & FAQs
- Do I need to use a pizza stone? Nope! You can cook grilled pizza right on the pizza grate, no pizza stone needed!
- Pizza dough prep: if you are making our easy pizza dough you can easily make this ahead of time and place it in the fridge, covered, after it has been divided into 3 portions. Use when ready or prep the night before cooking. You could also wrap each ball of dough in plastic wrap and store in the freezer for up to 5 months before using it.
- Cooking multiple pizzas: if you are planning to cook all 3 portions of pizza dough, we highly recommend that you bring the grill to a high heat and cook all of the pizza crusts (in batches), remove them from the grill, add sauce/toppings, turn down the heat to medium-low, and then return the pizzas to the grill to finish cooking.
- Pizza leftovers: any leftover pizza can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days and reheated when ready to eat.

Grilled Pizza (how to grill pizza) – learn how to cook the BEST grilled pizza with this foolproof recipe! The perfect summer dinner idea!
Ingredients
- 1 batch homemade pizza dough
- semolina flour
- pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- toppings of choice: pepperoni, grated mozzarella, sausage, mushrooms, onions, etc.
- for serving: grated parmesan cheese, crushed red pepper flakes, etc.
Instructions
- Divide dough into 3 portions (this will make 3 10-inch pizzas).
- Ensure grill grates are clean and bring grill to high heat (600 degrees F.).
- Spread a generous amount of semolina flour on your baking sheet. Place one portion of dough on top and start pressing down and pushing edges out with your fingers on a flat surface. Alternatively, you can use a rolling pin, but the dough has a strong bounce-back so your fingers may work better.
- Once pizza is as thin as you want it bring it out to the grill. Spray grill with your favorite non-stick cooking spray or with a little olive oil. Carefully place the pizza directly on to the hot grill grates over direct heat. Close the lid and let cook 2-3 minutes. Open grill and gently flip the dough over. Close the grill and let cook another 2-3 minutes.
- Remove dough from grill, add some pizza sauce, and your desired toppings (don’t go too heavy with the toppings). Reduce the temperature of the grill down to medium-low and return the pizza directly to the grill grate. Close the lid, let the cheese melt, and the toppings warm through – approx. 2-4 minutes.
- Remove and let rest 5 minutes. Cut into slices and enjoy!
Notes
- prep time: prep time for the pizza dough is approx. 1 hour
- pizza dough – we cannot recommend our super easy homemade pizza dough enough, but you can also use a store-bought dough (we love Delallo’s)!
- Storage: any leftover pizza slices can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
- Multiple pizzas: if you are cooking more than just one pizza, we recommend cooking all the pizza crusts (in batches) first on high heat, add all the toppings, and then drop the grill heat to finish cooking them all. This will go much smoother than turning the heat up and down for each pizza.
