Key Ingredients & Substitutions
Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, and estimated nutritional information.
- Bacon: We used thick cut bacon to get the heartiest bites. Feel free to use a thinner variety, but just adjust cooking time accordingly.
- lettuce: We used romaine to keep this classic like it’s intended to be made, but use whatever leafy green you’ve got.
- tomato: Heirloom tomatoes are gorgeous, plump, and perfect for cutting big thick slabs. Beefsteak tomatoes are hearty enough to be used instead if that’s what you’ve got.
- mayonnaise: Because no one likes a dry sandwich. We’ve got a basic whole30 mayo recipe for those who need it. And even if you don’t, it’s awesome and worth trying at least once.

Then let the bacon cook for around 15 minutes.

You’ve got a lot of bread to butter, so to make this go quicker, melt your butter in a small dish and use a basting brush to quick coat both sides of your bread slices.

What To Serve With BLTs
These easy sandwiches would be perfect with our creamy cucumber salad or our fresh purple cabbage slaw. If your short on time, classic potato chips or fries would be great alternatives. Going for the full meal? Then be sure to end it all with some s’mores rice krispie treats and our blackberry mojito; two summer classics that we can’t get enough of.
Recipe FAQs and Tips
- What to do with leftover grilled bacon: Throw it in our bacon ranch pasta salad or throw them in our chicken bacon ranch quesadillas.
- What type of bread is best for this sandwich? We love using sourdough as it’s hearty enough to withstand the heat of the grill. But you could also use deli rye, multigrain, or plain white bread.
- Can I bake the bacon instead? Absolutely. Learn how to bake bacon in the oven.

Description
Our epic Grilled BLTs are a great way to make this traditional sandwich outside on a those hot summer days!
Ingredients
- 12 slices of sourdough bread
- 3–4 tablespoons butter (regular or plant-based)
- 1 pound thick cut bacon
- 6 tablespoons mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip)
- romaine lettuce
- 2–3 heirloom tomatoes, sliced
Instructions
- Prep: Preheat oven to a medium-high heat and ensure the grill grates are clean.
- Grill Bread: Butter both sides of each piece of bread. Place them directly on the hot grill grates and cook for about 1 minute on each side. Remove and set them aside.
- Grill Bacon: Line a large baking sheet (that will fit on the grill) with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Spray the rack with non-stick cooking spray and place the slices of bacon on top. Close the lid and let them cook at 400 degrees F for 15-18 minutes or they reach your desired crispness (regular bacon that is not thick cut will cook in around 12-15 minutes).
- Build Sandwiches: Generously spread mayo on the slices of grilled bread and then add your desired amount of lettuce, tomatoes, and bacon.
- Serve: Enjoy right away!
Notes
- Lettuce: we love romaine lettuce but any variety of lettuce would work (i.e. iceberg, butter, etc.).
- Bacon: after testing, we found that thick cut bacon took about 15-18 minutes to cook and regular bacon was around 12-15 minutes.
- Dairy-Free: simply use a plant-based butter.
- Gluten-Free: option to use a gluten-free bread, if needed.
