How To Grill Tri Tip
The first steps to grilling tri tip are to mix up a delicious marinade and let the steak sit in it for about 30 minutes to overnight, if possible. While preheating the grill, let the steak come to room temperature. Give the marinated steak a quick sear over a high heat, drop the grill temp and cook to an internal temp of 130 degrees F (use an instant read thermometer).

Let the meat rest on a cutting board for about 5-10 minutes and then serve any way you want!
Best Ways To Serve Grilled Tri Tip
There are so many different ways to enjoy this tender steak! We highly recommend our Grilled Steak Tacos, a Grilled Steak Rice Bowl, Steak Fajita Bowl, or an Easy Steak Salad.

Recipe FAQs and Tips
- Do you grill tri tip on direct or indirect heat? To keep the inside of the steak juicy and tender, it is recommended to give the outside a quick sear over direct heat and then drop the temperature slightly after that quick sear but continue to cook over direct heat. Indirect heat would only be needed if you prefer a more well done finish.
- Is it better to cook tri tip fast or slow? For this cut of steak, we prefer to cook it fast on a hot grill. Low and slow would be better suited for other types of beef.
- How long to grill tri tip on gas grill? A 1.75 pound tri tip steak cooked for about 10-12 minutes over direct heat for a medium rare finish. Total cook time will depend on the size and thickness of the meat.

Description
Our tender and juicy Tri Tip Steak recipe is perfect for using in a steak salad, steak tacos, or enjoy with your favorite side dishes!
Ingredients
Steak:
- 1.75 pounds tri tip steak
- kosher salt and ground black pepper
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (sub avocado oil)
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
- 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
Instructions
- Season: Remove the tri tip steak from the packaging and put in a deep baking dish or large storage bag. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Marinate: Put all of the marinade ingredients in a small bowl; mix to fully combine. Pour the Steak Marinade over the seasoned steak. Let marinate, covered in the fridge, for at least 30 minutes or up to overnight, if you have time.
- Prep: Preheat the outdoor grill to a medium-high heat and make sure the grill grates are clean.
- Grill Steak: Remove the steak from the marinade, allowing any excess liquid to drip off. Place the steak directly on the hot grill grates to get a nice sear. Cook on the grill for 5-7 minutes per side (timing depends on the thickness) for medium rare finish or until the center of the thickest part of the steak reaches 130 degrees F using an internal meat thermometer – or let cook until desired level of doneness.
- Rest + Serve: Let the steak rest for about 5-10 minutes and then enjoy any way you want – we love making Grilled Steak Tacos with Cilantro Lime Sauce!
Notes
- Marinade: highly recommend our easy and delicious steak marinade, but you can also use a store-bought version, keep it simple with just salt and pepper, or try our Steak Dry Rub!
- Storage: leftover steak can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days.
