The Best Baked Potatoes On The Grill
During those hot summer months, we love nothing more than making an entire dinner on the grill. There is minimal cleanup and we keep the heat out of the kitchen, because making baked potatoes in the oven can definitely increase the temperature of your house. Fire up your gas grill or charcoal grill and just toss on some grilled baked potatoes alongside some pork chops or grilled spatchcock chicken and maybe some grilled brussel sprouts. It will quickly become a new family favorite recipe!

What You Will Need
- whole potatoes – we picked up some classic russet potatoes from our local grocery store, but feel free to use Yukon gold potatoes or red potatoes too!
- olive oil – just drizzle a little bit on the outside to help crisp up the potato skin.
- salt & pepper – these simple seasonings are always a must!
- aluminum foil – enough heavy duty aluminum foil to wrap each potato individually. This helps to hold in the heat and cook the potatoes quickly and without drying them out.
How To Cook Potatoes On The Grill
The first steps to making this baked potato recipe are to gather the three ingredients needed.
Give each potato a quick rinse and scrub under cold water, dry with paper towels, and poke potatoes with a fork. Now place the entire potato in a piece of foil, drizzle with olive oil, rub it in with your hands, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Wrap the foil tightly around the whole potato and continue this process until they are all seasoned and wrapped.
Place all of the potatoes directly on the hot grill grates of the preheated grill. Close the lid and let them cook at a medium high heat for around 45-60 minutes cooking time oruntil the inside of the potato reaches 210 degrees F (use a meat thermometer).
Carefully remove them from the grill, cut into each potato with a paring knife, and enjoy any way you want!
Best Ways To Serve Grilled Baked Potatoes
An epic loaded baked potato can be a main meal on its own – there are so many options! Occasionally, we love to keep dinner simple and create a grilled baked potato bar so that everyone can make their own creations. Some of the items we like to use for topping our baked potato are butter, a dollop of sour cream, green onions, fresh chives, broccoli, bacon bits, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, sea salt, or even a bit scoop of chili!
Recipe FAQ
Yes, no matter if you make oven baked potatoes or baked potatoes on a grill, we definitely recommend that you poke a few holes in them with a fork.
You can, but if you prefer to put them directly on the grill grates we would recommend cutting them into potato wedges and then use a grill pan or grill basket. If you put a whole potato directly on the grill, without foil, it will begin to dry out because it needs at least 45 minutes to cook all the way through.
Fully cooked potatoes should be fluffy in the middle. You can determine this by piercing the potato to see if it is firm or fluffy. Also, a perfectly cooked potato should have an internal temperature of 210 degrees F (use an instant-read thermometer) – such a quick and easy way to know it is done!
