An Easy Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe that will be ready in about 15 minutes and only uses 9 real, simple ingredients! It is packed with flavor and perfect for making any of your favorite pizzas. We love using it along with our homemade pizza dough recipe!
The Best Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe
Homemade pizzas have become a weekly tradition in our house, especially in the summer when we can cook it on the grill or smoker – so good!! We love setting out the sauce and toppings so that everyone in the family can make their own individual pizza the way they like it (using our homemade pizza dough). It is definitely the kid’s favorite meal of the week and so much fun!
Also, just to be clear, this is a recipe for pizza sauce, not marinara or spaghetti sauce. Those are two different things but the question does come up a lot!
What You Will Need
- olive oil – a splash in the pan to help sauté the garlic and onion.
- garlic & sweet yellow onion – a perfect flavor combination to get the party started!
- tomato sauce & tomato paste – the tomato base for this simple and delicious sauce.
- dried oregano leaves, Italian seasoning, kosher salt, & black pepper – an assortment of seasonings that really deliver on flavor for this sauce, option to add as much or as little as you want!
Should Homemade Pizza Sauce Be Cooked
It doesn’t HAVE to be cooked before you use it, but we definitely recommend cooking it for a bit. A quick sauté for the onion and garlic helps to break them down and bring out their flavor, plus simmering the whole sauce for a few minutes helps to cook off some liquid, resulting in a thicker sauce, and it really amps up all the flavors in the sauce overall.
Recipe Variations
You can easily make some variations on this pizza sauce recipe to adjust for your taste. Some people like it a little sweeter so you could add 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon of coconut sugar (or granulated sugar), taste, and go from there until it reaches your desired sweetness. You can do this with the other spices too, just add the amount in the recipe, taste, and then adjust according to your taste.
What Type Of Pizza Can I Make With This Sauce
You can really make any type of pizza you want! It can be spread on store-bought pizza dough, homemade pizza dough (our personal favorite), grilled pizza, smoked pizza, cauliflower pizza, Naan pizza, use it in a calzone, or use it for dipping garlic bread or breadsticks. It is super versatile! And perfect for a variety of toppings too! We love all the veggies, but you also can’t go wrong with a traditional pepperoni.
How To Store Or Freeze Homemade Pizza Sauce
Once the sauce has fully cooled you can place it in an airtight container or mason jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. If you are looking to freeze the sauce you can place it in a freezer safe container and store for up to 3 months. When you are ready to use it, you can thaw it in the fridge and then make sure it comes back to room temp before placing it on a pizza.
