The Best Instant Pot Pork Shoulder
This Instant Pot Pork Shoulder repine is one of my favorite recipes to make for a crowd! We are such a fan of pork shoulder in our house. It is one of our go-to’s when we are hosting any sort of family or group get-together! So easy to make, it smells amazing and is versatile to serve. It is so easy to make guests happy when they can choose to eat it plain, eat it with sauce, put in a little taco, burrito bowl or on some sort of bun (lettuce or otherwise). Did I mention it is perfect for meal-prep too! It’s a favorite for a reason!

What You Will Need
- pork dry rub – option to make our homemade pork rub or pick-up your favorite store-bought version at the local grocery store.
- yellow mustard & liquid smoke – rub both on the outside of the pork shoulder for even more great flavor!
- pork shoulder (with or without the bone) – highly recommend a bone-in pork shoulder for the added flavor, but this is up to you.
- beef broth – at least 1 cup of liquid is always needed when cooking in a pressure cooker to keep the meat juicy and tender.
How To Make Instant Pot Pork Shoulder
The first steps to making this easy recipe are to rub the outside in yellow mustard, then liquid smoke, and then the pork dry rub seasoning.

Place the trivet in the bottom of the Instant Pot and then the seasoned pork shoulder on top of that. Seal the lid on top and cook on high pressure for 90 minutes. Let it naturally release for 15 minutes and then quick release.

Shred the super tender pulled pork with two forks and feel free to return to the Instant Pot in order to toss in the juices.

Best Ways To Serve Instant Pot Pork Shoulder
A pulled pork recipe is one of the most versatile to make! Keep it simple by enjoying this pork with your favorite BBQ sauce with a side dish of creamy coleslaw and some slow cooker baked beans. Or turn this tender meat into another recipe, like our pulled pork tacos, pulled pork nachos, pork enchiladas, or pulled pork sliders.

Storage & Freezer
Leftover pulled pork can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days. Or place is a freezer-safe container to freeze for up to 3 months. Highly recommend storing shredded pork with some of the juices to keep it from drying out in the reheating process.

Recipe FAQs and Tips
- Is pork butt the same as pork shoulder? Yes! Another term often used is “Boston Butt.” Here is a nice diagram of the different pork cuts! So helpful!
- Paleo Pork Rub – The homemade pork rub that I use in this recipe is a blog favorite! It has so many wonderful uses for pork or chicken, but it works so well in this Instant Pot Pulled Pork recipe! Cannot wait for you guys to try it!
- How long should you cook pork shoulder in a pressure cooker? For a pork shoulder that is 3 – 3.5 pounds, you need to cook it on HIGH in your pressure cooker for about 90 minutes.

Description
A delicious and simple Instant Pot Pulled Pork recipe that is perfect for a serving a crowd or weekend meal prep!
Ingredients
- 1 batch of this homemade pork rub
- 3 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1–2 tablespoons liquid smoke
- 1 (3-3.5 lb) pork shoulder (with or without the bone)
- 1 cup beef broth
Instructions
- Season Pork: Place pork shoulder on a large plate or platter and rub with liquid smoke, getting into all the little crevices. Then rub with yellow mustard. Finally, take the pork rub and rub all over, it will create almost a paste.
- Instant Pot: Place trivet inside Instant Pot and add beef broth. Ensure valve is set to “Seal”. Place pork shoulder on the trivet and cook on high pressure for 90 minutes. Allow to naturally release 15 minutes and then manually release remaining pressure carefully.
- Shred: Remove from slow cooker and shred with two forks (discarding bone if it had one). Feel free to return shredded meat to Instant Pot to combine with the juices.
- Serve: Enjoy immediately or store for enjoying later in the week!
Notes
- Option to Wrap Overnight: Feel free to cook this pork shoulder right away, but you can also wrap up the seasoned pork shoulder (in plastic wrap or foil) and allow it to sit in the refrigerator overnight. This will help it be little more flavorful, but it is not necessary for the recipe to turn out!
- Instant Pot: A pressure cooker will need additional time to come to pressure and always use your Instant Pot according to the manufacturers instructions.

Hi! If my pork shoulder is larger do I just add to the cook time? Thank you!
Erin says
Hi Stephanie – yes, you can add on to the cook time by an hour or so (depending on how much bigger it is)!

I used a different seasoning- What’s Gaby Cooking brand “Gaby’s Go To Blend”- but everything else was the same, and the result was delicious! Added the pork to stir fried corn, zucchini, kale, onions, broccoli for meal prep 😊
